Community leaf clean ups

A few people have mentioned to me that they used to do autumn leaf clean ups for their street.  They were worried that this might not be possible under the new green waste arrangements.  But in fact if people are doing this for their neighbourhood then the Council will provide free green waste bags and collect the bags filled with leaves for free.  They just need to call the "waste minimisation team" on 303 1112.

It's great that Birmngham people are prepared to do this to help keep their neighbourhood clean, and that BCC is backing them in this way.

Why the contribution is important

By cleaning up fallen leaves, communities can help keep their neighbourhood clean and safe.  This could also help keep the Council's street cleaning costs down.

Unfortunately there are lot of things offered by the council that people just don't know about1

Not sure how this stacks up against paid for garden waste collections - how many leaves would need to be collected to constitute a community clean up. The two big trees in my front garden would easily fill 10 bags without me venturing onto the street.
Whilst people taking responsibility for their own environment is very important, is there room to exploit this?

Also why don't we suggest to folk paying for green bins that if they have small quantities of waste they could consider sharing the cost with a neighbour?

I like the idea of a community green bin - not sure what the official rules on that are!

I'm not convinced the definition would be a problem in reality - most people are honest and/or their neighbours would "shop" them if they repeatably abused this.

It is a little ironic that the minute leaves start falling the green bin collection stops. Then there are problems with dumped garden refuse unsightly dumping areas in high tree concentration areas. Leaf mulch is great for gardens, maybe its time for the LA to re establish cut price composters and leak mulching frames to the public. Either that or extend the green bin collections till December, the later may not necessarily be a cost saving, but will stop complaints and special pickups which both cost money in time spent.
