Volunteer service for Birmingham libraries

With cuts in the budget for the library system, instead of cutting down dramatically on opening hours and resources, I suggest a supplementary volunteer library group be established. It would provide an opportunity for many people to develop new skills, contribute to the community, enhance their own CVs and meet new people. Existing staff could be utilised to effectively and professionally train volunteers in ways which would be useful to the library.

Why the contribution is important

The library service itself is already established and the new central library is critically acclaimed. It is important for the community to support this, an opportunity for Birmingham to lead the way, establishing a successful liaison instead of allowing budget restrictions to limit a marvellous resource. 'Forward' together and we can make it happen.
