Thank You Polish Women

If you have visited a shop or restaurant anywhere in Birmingham over the last few year’s chances are you have at some point been served by a Polish woman. Polish women work really hard in low paid unglamorous jobs serving us or doing cleaning.

Back home in Poland International Women’s Day is a big event where for once a year women are pampered and shown appreciation.   Traditionally men would buy their wives or girlfriends a bunch of Tulips and a pair of stockings (a rare treat in Communist days).

Two years ago Acocks Green based charity House of Play + Education set up a playgroup especially for Polish parents giving them the opportunity to socialise in their own language but also to learn about English Culture and learn English; they  have discovered all sorts of wonderful English treats such as Cream Teas and Brandy Butter on their Mince Pies.

One thing the mums really enjoy are trips to the countryside or to the seaside so they can discover more about the Beauty of this country. We would like to organise a trip for 30 women and their children to Sanders Park in Bromsgrove where they can enjoy a walk and take their children to the playground. Every woman will also receive a bouquet of flowers and refreshments in the park.

Why the contribution is important

So often we are told that sport is the only way to keep fit but this is simply not the case and is impractical for many women especially if they have children to look after. We believe in the importance of keeping active; going out socialising, exploring new places, playing with your children. Through our Playgroups parents have a reason to go out, they have made new friends and they have  grown in confidence we want to open that opportunity up to more women and encourage a culture of community and participation. This outing will hopefully be the first of many trips we have got planned for this year.

4% of the population of Acocks Green are classed as “White non British” compared to just 2% city wide proving that Acocks Green is an ideal place to develop this project which is based on an International day which means very little to English people but has a great sense of pride to our Polish friends.
