Bulky Waste Collection

Please can we start the bulky waste collection up again as it will stop furniture items and mattresses being left outside people's houses.  People should be given the option to use it and pay, it would save having a skip and paying £140+ for skip hire that people might not have room for anyway.

Why the contribution is important

To keep the area tidy and free from junk.

To help save money for residents in the long run as it saves on skip hire.

It means you will not have to remove furniture left dumped by people and have a way of making some money.

It should be free. The city spent £750,000 on fly tipping collection in 2014 and its going up year on year. some of that could be used to pay for free bulk waste collection. I report fly tip about once month locally so outcome Waste management and collect it why not stop it in the first place. Encourage DFS etc to offer a collect service for matresses old furniture?

we pay over £1000 in council tax, a huge amount. Still Council wants to charge for other things. For many residents only benefit they get from council is waste collection. If council stop wasting money through bad management in other areas, money can be found for bulk waste collection etc. Poor residents are helpless in all these...

The bulky waste is all going in the incinerator at present, i believe. If items that can be reused are actually sold then this could mean a free collection. At least if people pay they would know that someone on a low income is benefiting from the item they didn't want.

I agree the bulky waste collection should be free, it stops people fly tipping. About once a year is sufficient, it was a great success in my area when in operation.

Birmingham used to advertise a once-a-year free collection for anything and, yes, it was a great success. Also booking the free service from the website was also good as it allowed people to get it sorted for free.

BCC are in a difficult situation because budgets for things need to be reduced, but a good refuse collection and bulky waste collection service go hand-in-hand with reduced litter, pest control, and fly-tipping... so simply cutting one budget would require an increase in another.

There are too many scummy people in Birmingham that think they have a right to free waste disposal services at their doorstep and those are the sorts of people who ultimately would need to use this free service. The rest of us would just take it to the tip or book a paid-for collection. But where's the appeal in taking it to the tip? Just do what your neighbour did, dump it, and someone comes and gets it in a few weeks anyway... (See where I am going with this?)
