Use smaller local companies to process waste

Birmingham City Council should break up the waste contract and make use of the many small local companies to process the materials and resources it collects in the waste and recycling system. Materials could be sold to various small companies based according to geography or type or material.

Why the contribution is important

Using small companies mean resources in the waste could generate income instead of costing the council money to dispose of. It also means more local jobs are created and the waste system contributes to a stronger local economy.

This is the way forward. Birmingham is too big and a one-size fits all approach does not work. Smaller companies could offer Dry Waste Recycling (DWR) which would eliminate the need for households to recycle as it would be done at the plant. Smaller companies would probably pay residents to recycle rather than charging residents for a garden tax. Each community should be able to select its company.
